The real subject

The North American P-51D is the most widespread production version of the American single-seat fighter aircraft Mustang. You will recognize it at first glance: the fuselage spine behind the cockpit is lowered and the canopy has the shape of a bubble, so the pilot can see to the rear as well. It is precisely this silhouette and the large areas of smooth metal that made the Mustang a rewarding subject for colorful finishes.

What the set contains

A sheet of decals in 1:72 scale for a model of the P-51D. The number of machines covered and the extent of the national insignia and supplementary inscriptions are given by the instructions enclosed with the sheet. The set widens the possibilities of a kit, which tends to be supplied with only a few variants, and suits a model you are otherwise building straight from the box as well.

Building and painting tips

With the Mustang it pays to prepare the base carefully, because on a polished metal surface every edge of the film is visible. Clear coat the area with gloss clear, therefore. Cut the decal out close to the printing, soak it for a few seconds in lukewarm water and let it rest until it starts to slide freely. Transfer it to the model together with the paper, hold it and pull the paper out from under the decal. Press the water out with a soft brush from the center toward the edges; softener will help into the panel lines. Once dry, clear coat the whole model according to the sheen the finish is to have.
