A photo-etched gun bay set for the 1:72 P-40E model is an accessory to a kit, not an aircraft model. It lets you open the wing gun bay and show its inside.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set holds photo-etched metal parts for an open gun bay in the wing of a P-40E model in the AZ Model kit. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory for a modeler who already has one. It is made by the Czech company Brengun.
The P-40E carried its armament in the wings, reached through hinged panels. On a model built as it comes, the whole wing is smooth and all you see of the armament is the muzzles. An open bay with its internal structure, the gun mountings and a hinged panel, though, is among the most rewarding details that can be shown on a fighter model. It draws the eye, breaks up the uniform surface of the wing and looks good on a diorama with an aircraft under maintenance.
Opening the bay means cutting into the plastic, so mark the outline carefully and go slowly. The panel can be cut out with a sharp scalpel in repeated strokes along the marked line, or you can first drill a row of small holes and join them. Then level the edges with a file and keep testing whether the photo-etched insert sits properly. Degrease the metal before gluing and cover it with a primer, because the inside of the bay is painted differently from the skin and the paint has to hold. It is bonded with super glue drop by drop. Paint the inside of the bay and bring it out with a wash before the wing is closed.
This is an accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
