A photo-etched set for the interior of a model of the patrol flying boat Martin PBM-5A Mariner in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory with which the inside of the fuselage and the pilot's compartment are fitted out. Thin metal etching allows instrument panels, consoles and bulkheads in a thickness that cannot be reached with injection-molded plastic. The code designation of the line corresponds to a full photo-etched set, that is to a larger fret than the smaller sets of the Zoom line. The manufacturer is the Czech company Eduard.
The Mariner was a twin-engined patrol flying boat of the US Navy with a gull wing and twin vertical tails. Long patrol flights over the ocean meant a numerous crew and a spacious, broken-up interior to the fuselage with stations for the navigator and the radio operator. The PBM-5A version was amphibious, with retractable wheeled landing gear, and it was used in postwar service on search and rescue tasks as well.
Deal with the interior before you close the halves of the fuselage up; afterwards you will not get to it. Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface and bend them over a straight edge. Degrease the metal and lay primer under it. On broken-up interiors it pays to shade the deeper places darker, so that the detail is not lost under one flat tone. Fit the glazing at the very end, so that it does not pick up dust.
