A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box. According to the name it depicts Pictish warriors and also Celtic and Scottish warriors of the late Iron Age and the early Middle Ages. It is neither a model of a vehicle nor a kit of equipment but a figure set intended for dioramas and for the gaming table.
The figures match the equipment of a lightly armed warrior of the period: simple clothing with no full-body armor, a cloak on some of the figures, and then a shield and hand weapons, that is a spear, an axe or a sword. In a scene this is infantry without heavy protection, which is set out in looser formations rather than in close ranks. That also determines the way the set is used when putting a diorama together.
Figures in 1:72 scale are painted with a brush, and an airbrush suits at most the primer. First wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry out properly. Use a primer with good adhesion, and on figures cast from soft plastic optionally a flexible primer, otherwise the paint will crack when they bend. Work from the base areas toward the details; a dark wash will bring out the folds of the clothing and the faces of the shields, and final drybrushing will pull the edges out. The metal parts and the points of the weapons only need to be suggested with a dark metallic shade, because at this scale a sheen quickly looks unnatural.
The figures are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
