A helmet, an oxygen mask and an immersion suit — a figure of a pilot in 1:72 scale for Nordic Cold War hardware.
Responsibility details are not available.
The head of a figure carries a surprising amount of information about the period in which a model stands, in a very small space. Swedish airmen of the 1960s and 1970s used a hard-shell helmet with a sun visor and with it an oxygen mask connected to the machine by a hose. The mask covers the lower part of the face, so only a narrow band around the eyes is left visible — for a modeler that is in fact a relief, because the hardest part of the painting falls away and what decides is the contrast between the glossy shell and the matte fabric of the mask and the suit.
The figure wears an immersion suit, which was compulsory equipment on flights over cold Nordic waters. Besides the Draken and the Viggen the equipment also covers further machines, among them the Lansen and the SK60 trainer, so the range of use is wide and one figure will serve on several builds.
The recommended order of painting goes from the top down: first the shell of the helmet in a saturated color with a gloss varnish, then the matte mask and hose, and finally the suit and the vest. The visor can be suggested with a dark varnish and a drop of translucent paint, which at a small reduction looks more convincing than an attempt at real glass.
The casting is resin and is supplied without paint and without a base. Before fitting it into a cockpit a dry fit is advisable, because the helmet adds to the height of the figure and there tends to be little room under a closed canopy.
The hose of the oxygen mask is worth a mention too. On the casting it is usually suggested only by a short stub, because the rest of the run disappeared into the side wall of the cockpit. Anyone who wants the scene complete can extend the hose with fine soft wire wrapped in adhesive tape and lead it into the wall of the tub — five minutes of work, and the cockpit suddenly looks inhabited.
