In a small scale it is the edge of the base that decides the impression a scene makes. A fence hides it, marks out a plot and gives the scene a boundary beyond which the viewer fills in the rest of the world. The fence also serves as a guide to scale: the size of vehicles and buildings is read from the height of a fence faster than from anything else.

Try the layout dry and do not run the fence in a perfectly straight line, as slight irregularity looks more credible. Shorten it with a tool suited to the given material, make the cut a little away from the part and sand the edge. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. In 1:72 scale choose a finer contrast than in large scenes: a base wood shade, a thinned dark glaze into the gaps and only a hint of a lighter tone from a dry brush. Strong contrast would look coarse at such a small size. At the foot of the fence add an earth shade, which ties it into the terrain.
