A fence divides the surface of a diorama into the part where the action takes place and the part that merely fills in the surroundings. It hides the boundary of the base, so that the scene does not end at random, and it gives the viewer the scale before there is time to look at the main motif. Along a road or behind figures it also serves as an unobtrusive backdrop.

Try the placement dry and run the fence with slight irregularity, as a perfectly straight line looks artificial. Shorten it with a tool suited to the given material, make the cut a little away from the part and sand the edge. Choose the glue according to the material of the part. Wash and degrease before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold. In 1:72 scale work with fine contrast: a wood base, a thinned glaze into the gaps and only a hint of a lighter tone from a dry brush. At the foot of the fence apply an earth shade or pigment, which ties it into the terrain.
