About product

Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.D 1:72, an IBG kit with an accompanying brochure

This kit from the Polish manufacturer IBG Models belongs to a booklet collector series, in which every part comes with a brochure about the machine in question and the model itself inside it. The package therefore contains injection-molded plastic parts of the tank in 1:72 scale and a printed brochure with the history of the vehicle, technical data, period photographs and building instructions. The text of the brochure is in English and German. The model is meant to be glued and painted; it is not finished.

The real subject

The Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.D was one of the early production versions of the German Panzer IV medium tank. Vehicles of this version were built from the fall of 1939 to the fall of 1940 at the plant in Magdeburg. Against the older forms the D version was given heavier frontal armor, whose thickness rose from 14.5 mm to 30 mm, and a stepped shape to the front plate of the hull. The combat weight came to roughly 20 tons. The main armament was a short 75 mm gun, complemented by MG 34 machine guns. In the early phase of the war the Panzer IV served as a support tank intended rather for destroying fortifications and unprotected targets than for fighting other tanks.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale the parts are small, so cut them off with thin nippers and level the remains of the gates with a file. Assemble and paint the running gear and the wheels before you close the hull up and fit the fenders, as you will not reach them later. Spray the model over a primer, then the base shade and only after that do the weathering. A dark wash into the pressings and the latches, a fine accent on the edges with a dry brush and dust pigments on the underside of the hull and the running gear all work well. Keep the traces of muddy service restrained, so that in a small scale they do not overpower the shape of the vehicle.

Who the model is for

  • modelers who collect German armored equipment in 1:72 scale
  • those interested in the early production versions of the Panzer IV tank
  • those who will appreciate a model complemented by a printed brochure
  • builders looking for a smaller project for a few evenings

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A printed brochure about the vehicle and, with it, an injection-molded plastic kit of the tank in 1:72 scale including building instructions.

The text is in English and German. The building instructions are pictorial, so you can build from them without knowing the language.

Yes, in scope it is a smaller kit. The parts are small in this little scale, though, so tweezers and a sharp knife come in useful.

No. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue and paints have to be bought as well.
