The SAAB 37 Viggen two-seat version masking set from Art Scale is a modeling accessory to the Special Hobby kit, not a model of the aircraft. It covers the clear parts while spraying, so the frames come out straight and with a crisp transition between the paint and the glass. The term one-sided means a single-sided set for the outer side of the glazing.
The SAAB 37 Viggen was a Swedish combat aircraft with an unusual aerodynamic concept: ahead of the main delta wing it carries a smaller lifting surface with flaps. A Volvo powerplant with afterburning and a thrust reverser, together with sturdy landing gear, allowed short takeoffs and landings even on stretches of road, which the Swedish defense system counted on as alternative airstrips. The two-seat version is the trainer: it has a raised rear station and a longer, divided canopy. For a modeler that means a larger glazed area with more frames than the single-seat machines have, and therefore substantially longer work with masking.
Wash and degrease the clear part. Lift the masks off the backing film with tweezers, lay them on the frame and press them down with a soft tool so that the edges seat along their whole length. On the curved parts of the canopy a small fan of cuts helps, or careful trimming with a sharp scalpel right on the part. Spray in thin coats: first the shade of the cockpit interior, then the base coat and finally the top color. A heavy coat builds a ridge under the edge of the mask and leaves a step once it is removed. Take the mask off as soon as the paint is dry to the touch. With a strongly divided scheme it pays to mask and spray in stages and to let the paint flash off properly between steps.
This is an accessory to a kit. The Special Hobby base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
