A Dead Design set for models of the British carrier-borne aircraft Sea Venom FAW.21 in 1:72 scale. It contains templates for the national insignia, that is, a different group of masks from the sets intended for glazing.
A British circular insignia is made up of several concentric colored fields, and that is why it is sprayed in several goes. Every layer has its own mask and between them the paint has to be left to dry. What decides is the register, that is, how exactly the next mask is settled onto the layer already finished. When the previous application is thick, it creates a step at the edge against which the mask rests, and the rings then come out unevenly wide. The solution is thin covering coats and patience.
A decal holds the color on a transparent film, which shows on the surface of a model as an extra thin layer. On a flat finish it tends to be visible as a glossy outline, and when badly settled air gets caught under it, which shows as silvering. A sprayed insignia has no such film, it lies straight in the finish and during further clear coating or weathering it behaves just like its surroundings. On curved areas the risk of the film rippling is done away with as well. It is advisable to close the surface with a gloss clear coat before the insignia are sprayed, because on a smooth base a mask seats better and the paint does not run under it.
