About product

Short Sunderland Mk. V in 1:72 scale from Special Hobby

A plastic kit of the British four-engine flying boat in its late Mk. V version. The model comes from the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby and, because of the size of the subject, is among the large builds: the real Sunderland had a span of over thirty-four meters, so even in 1:72 scale it makes a respectable piece for a display case. The kit is short-run, which means higher demands on preparing the parts and a more experienced hand than with mass-produced kits.

The real subject

The Short Sunderland was a maritime patrol and anti-submarine flying boat derived from the Empire transport machine. It served on long patrols over the ocean, on convoy escort and on rescue flights; for its heavy defensive armament it earned the nickname flying porcupine. The Mk. V version received American Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines in place of the previous Bristol ones, which brought higher power at altitude and better reliability on long flights. Machines of this version stayed in service for a number of years after the war.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run mold, expect the parts to have no locating pins — try every joint dry first and sand it back if needed. Nip the sprue gates off and level the area rather than breaking them away. The fuselage has a great deal of glazing and gun turrets, so prepare the masking of the windows in advance; clear parts benefit from gloss varnish and from a cement meant for canopies that does not fog the plastic. The large fuselage is best built in halves with the interior finished, and the joint strengthened with an internal brace. The model is displayed on a stand or on a beaching trolley, because a flying boat has no landing gear for taxiing. Matte white or light gray suits the lower surfaces, while the upper camouflage areas come alive with an overspray of a lightened shade in the middle of the panels.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Collectors of maritime and patrol aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Those who want a striking large model for a display case
  • Builders who are up for extensive masking of glazing

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. It is a short-run mold with no locating pins, where the parts have to be tried dry and sanded back. It calls for at least a few built models behind you.

The subject had a span of over thirty-four meters, so in 1:72 scale it is a model with a span of around half a meter. Bear that in mind when planning room in a display case.

Above all in its power plant — the Mk. V received American Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines in place of the previous British ones, which improved performance at altitude.

A flying boat has no conventional landing gear, so the model is placed on a stand, on a water base or on a beaching trolley.
