About product

SPz Marder 1A3 1:72 (Revell)

Injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from Revell. The real subject is the Schützenpanzer Marder in the 1A3 version, a tracked infantry fighting vehicle of the German Bundeswehr in its upgraded form. In ground vehicles 1:72 scale works well where you want to build a whole group of vehicles or a scene with landscape without it taking over the entire display case. The number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are stated on the box.

The real subject

The Marder entered service in the early 1970s as a vehicle meant to carry an infantry squad right up to the combat area and to support it with its own fire. A turret with an automatic cannon added the armament for fighting armored targets, while the hull carried both the crew and the dismounts. The upgrade to the 1A3 standard brought above all heavier armor protection, with the related external rework of the hull sides and the hull roof, revised hatches and a higher combat weight. In this form the vehicle served for many years as the standard tracked platform of the German mechanized infantry.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and paint the running gear before you fit the side skirts and the superstructure, because once it is closed up the wheels are hard to reach. Apply solvent cement for plastic thinly with a fine brush; at this scale any excess immediately floods the delicate detail. Lay down a primer before painting, then the base tone; for the three-color camouflage form the edges of the patches with a light overspray or with masking putty, as sharp tape would look harsh in a small scale. Pick out the engraved lines and the hatches with a dark paneliner, and add dust and mud pigments to the hull bottom and the running gear. Drybrushing on the armor edges gives the volume that a small model needs more than a large one.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers building Bundeswehr vehicles
  • Collectors of 1:72 scale who put together larger groups of vehicles
  • Diorama builders working with postwar vehicles
  • Beginning modelers looking for a manageable tracked model

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Mainly by heavier armor protection of the hull and the turret, the related changes to the exterior and a higher combat weight.

Yes, it is a manageable tracked model in a small scale. We recommend only that you take your time with gluing the running gear and that you paint before closing the hull.

The exact number of parts and the extent of the decal sheet are stated on the box.

Cement for plastic models, a primer and paints. None of that is included in the package.
