The Polish brand Mirage Hobby offers a figure set that joins the crew of the German Sturmgeschütz assault gun with a pair of members of the infantry; the name places it in the years 1942 to 1943. The combination of a crew and infantry matches the way these machines were used, because assault guns operated directly with foot units, not separately.
It arose as a means of direct fire support for the infantry: a low hull with no rotating turret, the main weapon with limited traverse in the front plate and a crew that came under the artillery, not under the tank arm. In the years 1942 and 1943 in particular its role was widening to include fighting armored hardware, and this is the period the set captures.
Figures from a set like this make sense in relation to each other. A commander in the hatch and infantrymen alongside the machine create a situation that the viewer reads without a caption. In 1:72 scale a legible outline decides, so choose muted colors and leave the contrast for small areas such as the equipment or the shoulder boards. Dust on the lower part of the pants and the boots will link the figures with the terrain and with the hardware they stand by. Leave the shoulder boards and the collar right to the end; they hold the attention even at a small size.
