Assault guns spent most of their time in position or moving alongside the infantry, so gear accumulated on them faster than on tanks in the rear. The resin set from Black Dog model adds exactly such pieces to a model and breaks up the large smooth surfaces of the superstructure.
The Ausf. E version closes the line of early variants with the short 75 mm gun, which served mainly to destroy fortified positions rather than to fight tanks. The recognition feature is the armored boxes on both sides of the superstructure, which appeared because of the radio set and an enlarged ammunition stowage. The low silhouette with no rotating turret gave the machine an advantage when firing from a concealed position.
The early machines wore a uniform dark gray coat, against which every added piece of gear shows up in strong contrast. Make use of that and paint the load in warmer tones. Do not forget the build-up of mud where the track meets the fender, because that is precisely where soil collected most on assault guns. Apply the pigments in layers and let the surface dry between them, otherwise you get a continuous crust instead of a naturally uneven build-up. The vehicle then looks like a machine after several days in the field, not like a model under a layer of powder.
