This is a decal set in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Bilek, not a kit. The set is a combined sheet covering several versions of the Su-17 and Su-22 family — the single-seat Su-22 M4, the two-seat combat trainer Su-22 UM3K and the Su-17. The decals serve to finish a model that is already built: they add the national insignia, numbers, technical lettering and warning markings, that is the part of the work that brings a model closest to a particular machine. The number of schemes, the list of machines and the extent of the technical lettering are stated on the box and in the instructions for the set.
The Su-17 was a Soviet single-engine ground attack and tactical strike aircraft with a variable-geometry wing on the outer panels, derived from the Su-7. The export versions were designated Su-20 and Su-22. The Su-22 M4 is a late single-seat variant, the Su-22 UM3K a two-seat combat trainer version with dual controls and a reworked fuselage. Machines of this family served in a number of European and non-European air forces including the Czechoslovak Air Force, so a wide palette of finishes goes with them — from three-color camouflage to simpler postwar schemes.
Apply the decals only onto a smooth gloss clear coat, otherwise a silvery film will remain under them. Cut the piece out as closely as possible, soak it in lukewarm water, slide it into place and draw off the excess water with a soft cloth. On riveted and engraved surfaces a decal softener helps the film sink into the detail. Once dry, overcoat the surface with a matte or semi-gloss varnish to suit the type of finish on the machine. Check before you buy that the scheme you have chosen matches the version you are building — single-seat and two-seat machines differ both in outline and in the layout of the lettering.
