A vacuum-formed transparent cockpit canopy for the model of the Su-27SM aircraft in 1:72 scale from Quinta Studio. It is not an airplane kit but an accessory that replaces the clear part from the box. In a small scale the difference tells most: an injection-molded canopy has a fairly thick wall in proportion to the model, and the frames then look heavier than they should. A thin vacuum-formed film solves that problem and at the same time makes it possible to build the cockpit with the canopy slid back, which is a common way of displaying this aircraft.
The Su-27SM is a modernized variant of the heavy twin-engine Su-27 fighter with reworked cockpit equipment. The large sliding canopy with its wide glazed area is characteristic of the whole family of the type and on a model it is one of the first items a viewer notices.
First the part is cut out of the film with a generous margin around the outline. The exact shape comes about only by sanding down to the parting line, not by cutting: abrasive paper is laid on a flat surface, the canopy is sanded across it with a circular motion and tried on the fuselage as the work goes on. You proceed in small steps, because material once taken off cannot be put back. The film scratches easily, so it is handled with clean hands and put down on a soft surface. The frames are masked with narrow strips of tape, and on curved areas it helps to cut the tape into wedges beforehand. For gluing, an adhesive is used that dries clear and does not fog the transparent material, typically a PVA glue for clear parts. Cyanoacrylate glue is better avoided, because its fumes can permanently cloud the area around the joint.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not an aircraft model. It is worth checking the match with your kit before ordering. Glue, paints and masks are not included in the package.
