A decal sheet in 1:72 scale from the British brand Xtradecal for models of the Supermarine Spitfire in the Mk.IX variants. The package contains printed decals only, and neither plastic parts nor a kit are part of it. Which particular machines the sheet carries is stated on the box; with a type as widespread as this, it pays to compare what is stated on the box before you start building.
The Spitfire Mk.IX came about as a quick solution: a Merlin engine with a two-stage supercharger was added to the airframe of the previous version, and thanks to it the aircraft kept its performance at greater altitude. The improvisation proved itself so well that the Mk.IX became one of the most numerous versions of the type. The additional letters in the designation refer to the form of the wing and the make-up of the armament, which differed between the variants, so in building the right combination of wing and markings has to be matched up.
The Spitfire has a slim, markedly rounded fuselage on which a large circular national marking does not sit flat. Apply the decal from one side, therefore, and spread it gradually around the curve with a damp brush, so that the surplus film does not gather into a fold. Check the roundel from the front and from behind as well: on a rounded fuselage, crooked placement shows as a distorted oval. Once dry, unify the model with a matte or semi-gloss varnish; otherwise the decals alone would be glossier than the surrounding camouflage.
The package contains decals only. The kit, paints, varnishes and softeners are not part of it.
