The Albatross is a large twin-engine amphibian with a boat-shaped hull, a retractable wheeled undercarriage and auxiliary floats under the wings. It was designed so that it could land on water as well as at an airfield, which made it a proven tool for search and rescue flights over the sea, for liaison work and for long-range transport. The high-set wing keeps the engines above the waves and the strengthened bottom of the hull takes the impact on the water. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force operated the type above all in the search and rescue role; flying boats had a long tradition there, because the island geography put a premium on being able to land on water far from land.
The hull of a flying boat has long and visible joints — it pays to fill and sand them carefully, ideally several times with an intermediate check under primer. Finish the cockpit before you close the fuselage. Seat the engine nacelles and the propellers so that the blades point the same way, otherwise the model looks restless. Glue the auxiliary floats on only after varnishing and watch that they are symmetrical. The model has large unbroken surfaces, so it pays to spray with an airbrush in thin layers and to reveal any surface flaws before the final shade. Lay down a gloss varnish compatible with the paint used before the decals. The waterline and the bottom of the hull take light soiling well, but do not overdo the weathering — rescue aircraft tend to be well looked after.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
