This injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese brand Hasegawa in 1:72 scale represents the UH-60J, the Japanese search and rescue version of the twin-engine helicopter of the Black Hawk family. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The UH-60J is a specialized search and rescue version derived from the American twin-engine utility helicopter and built in Japan under license. It differs from the basic military transport version above all in its equipment for long flights over the sea and for the rescue task itself: a nose radar for searching, auxiliary tanks on side pylons, a rescue hoist at the side door and equipment for operating at night. A highly visible color scheme is characteristic as well, meant to set the machine apart from combat types and to make it easier to spot. In its design it has a four-blade main rotor, a tail boom with a tail rotor and a pair of turboshaft engines above the cabin.
On helicopters the most sensitive place is the glazing of the cockpit; it pays to mask it before spraying and to glue it with an adhesive for clear parts, which leaves no clouding. The interior of the cabin is finished before the fuselage is glued together. Thin parts such as the tank pylons, the hoist and the antennas are fitted right at the end, so that they do not snap off during handling. The rotor blades are left to cure at the right angle and are glued on only after the painting. A conspicuous rescue scheme is best sprayed over a white or light gray primer, because richer shades lose their brightness on a dark base. Spray a gloss varnish before the decals, and once it has dried choose a matte or semi-gloss finish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
