About product

Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service seat belts 1:72 (Yahu Models)

A photo-etched set of seat belts in 1:72 scale from the Polish maker Yahu Models. It is an addition for the cockpit, not a model of an aircraft. The belts are etched from thin steel sheet and are supplied pre-painted, so they only need taking carefully out of the fret, shaping and seating in the seat. The printing has a fine, slightly worn look, so there is no laborious painting of small buckles and hardware.

What the set is for

In small-scale kits the seats tend to be bare and look empty in an open cockpit. Seat belts, meanwhile, are a detail a viewer notices among the first things on a finished model: they give the cockpit depth, a sense of scale and a touch of color. This version matches the practice of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service during the Second World War and suits fighter, bomber and training types of the period. The belts of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service and the Japanese Army Air Force differed, which is why the manufacturer offers both variants separately.

Fitting tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch scissors on a firm surface; never break them out. Use smooth-jawed tweezers and a bender or the edge of a steel ruler for shaping; the sheet is very thin and repeated bending in the same place can break it. Glue them with cyanoacrylate applied in a minimal amount on a pin, or with a glue intended for photo-etched parts; cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Let the belts drape freely over the edge of the seat and ripple them slightly, because taut and perfectly straight belts look unnatural. The shade can be fine-tuned with a light wash, but a full coat of paint is not needed.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Japanese naval aircraft in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who want to lift the cockpit without painting small parts
  • Builds with the canopy slid back, where the interior is visible
  • Newcomers to photo-etched parts, as belts are a rewarding first exercise

The set is an addition to a model, not a kit of an aircraft. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
