1:72 Yokosuka K5Y1 Willow is a kit of the Japanese training biplane from AZ model.
Responsibility details are not available.
A model of the Japanese basic trainer K5Y1 in 1:72 scale. It is a biplane with fixed landing gear and open cockpits for pupil and instructor, the type on which a whole generation of Imperial Japanese Navy pilots learned to fly. Willow is the Allied code name for this machine.
The K5Y grew out of an early 1930s design and was built in enormous numbers right up to the end of the war. It was powered by an air-cooled radial engine, and the aircraft was famous for its forgiving handling and its resistance to the rough treatment that training brings. The K5Y1 version was the landplane, with conventional wheeled landing gear; another version of the same type stood on floats. The striking orange-yellow finish of the trainers earned them a nickname that translates as red dragonfly.
With a biplane the geometry is what counts: set the upper wing on its struts only after the lower part has cured, and keep checking the angles from the front and from the side. The bracing between the wings can be suggested with a thin filament pulled taut and fixed with cyanoacrylate. The rich orange shade needs a light base, otherwise it looks muddy, and the open cockpits reveal the interior, so the seats, the control column and the belts deserve attention.
The parts are supplied on injection sprues and unpainted; glue and clear coats are not included.
