The 1:72 Yokosuka R2Y1 Keiun landing gear bay masks cover the bay openings before the outer coat is sprayed. The interior thus stays in its own shade and the edges of the bays crisp.

Pre-cut masks for covering the landing gear bays of a model in 1:72 scale. They are used at the moment the interior of the bays is finished and the painting of the outer surface comes up. The mask prevents the top color from flowing inside and erasing the difference between the interior and the airframe. At the same time it lets a crisp edge arise around the perimeter of the opening, a detail the eye notices on a finished model sooner than fine weathering inside.
The Yokosuka R2Y Keiun was a Japanese experimental fast reconnaissance aircraft from the end of the war, surviving only as a prototype. Unlike most contemporary Japanese types it had nosewheel landing gear, so its bays are arranged differently from machines with a tail wheel. A model with such landing gear has a prominent forward bay right behind the cockpit and a clean execution of it cannot be hidden.
First paint the bays and let them cure thoroughly, ideally overnight. Insert the mask with tweezers so that it seats all the way around the opening; an edge that has not seated is the main cause of seepage. Spray perpendicularly from above, not at an angle into the opening. After the coat has been laid on and has set, take the mask out while it can still be released easily. Check the perimeter against the light and repair any seepage with a brush before you start the weathering.
