3D printed set - Barrel Cactus

A set of 3D printed cacti of the barrel type from Green Stuff World for low vegetation on a diorama. Barrel cactus is the established name for a low, globular to barrel-shaped cactus that grows squat against the ground and has no arms like the tall columnar species.

How it differs from other vegetation

A desert scene is treacherous for a modeler in that the usual tools for greenery do not work in it. Static grass, foliage granulate and fine leaves do not belong in a parched landscape, and yet a scene without a single plant looks empty. A cactus fills that gap. It is one of the few elements that is both vegetation and a striking accent of shape, and all without turning the climate of the scene back into a temperate zone. The barrel type also stays low to the ground, so it will not cover vehicles or figures.

How it is layered

• Terrain and the ground layer come first; the cacti are set into the finished ground.
• Place them irregularly and in groups of different sizes; in nature they do not grow in a row.
• Sprinkle fine gravel and sand around the foot, so that the plant rises out of the ground and does not merely sit on it.
• Add dry stalks or sparse parched grass; a cactus alone will not make a scene.
• A base coat unifies the shade of the plants with the desert ground.
