The flat profile is 6 mm wide, 0.6 mm thick and 305 mm long. Brass can be cut with tin snips, bent over an edge, drilled and soldered, and unlike plastic it holds its shape even in a thin section and does not spring back to where it started. Modelers make flat bar and clamping bands from it, along with landing gear stiffeners, brackets, hinges, loops, the fittings of crates and the rails and railings of dioramas.
Cut edges stay sharp, so run a file along them before you begin shaping a part. Make the bend over the sharp edge of a steel rule and help yourself with flat pliers with smooth jaws, so that no notches are left on the surface. Degrease the area before soldering or gluing and roughen it with fine sandpaper; both solder and super glue then hold considerably better.
Bare brass does not take paint well on its own, and a coat will flake off it at the first bend. The safest way is to shape the part first, then degrease it and only apply a primer intended for metal to the finished piece; the covering shade goes on top of that. Anyone who wants the brass left showing can polish it instead and seal it with a clear varnish so that it does not tarnish. The material comes one piece at a time, so get the number of pieces your build calls for straight away.
Keep the strip straight, ideally in a tube or between two battens; a piece once bent returns to flat only with difficulty, and straightening leaves marks on the surface.
