About product

GFLF Simba 8x8, Frankfurt Airport, 1:24 (Revell)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the GFLF Simba 8x8 airport fire truck in 1:24 scale from Revell. Careful - this is not a military vehicle: the abbreviation GFLF stands for Grossflugfeldloeschfahrzeug, that is a large fire truck for the airport apron. According to the maker the kit has 476 parts and difficulty level 5 (for advanced modelers, from 13 years). It holds a detailed frame with the axles and the engine, a movable tandem front axle, realistic tires, an openable cab with a fitted interior and a movable firefighting boom with a nozzle. The enclosed decals make it possible to build the truck in the markings of Frankfurt Airport.

The real subject

The Simba is a specialized fire truck from Rosenbauer, developed for the demands of large modern airports. Its task is simple to describe and terribly hard to do: to reach a burning aircraft within a few tens of seconds and to bring a huge amount of extinguishing agent with it. Hence the odd shape - eight wheels, extreme power and tanks for thousands of liters. The figures given by the model's maker speak of a weight of around 45 tons, a V8 engine of over 31 liters and around 1250 horsepower, with acceleration to 80 km/h in 25 seconds and a tank for more than 11000 liters. The vehicle is about twelve meters long - in 1:24 scale that makes a model roughly half a meter in length. Make room for it; this is not a piece for the corner of a shelf.

Building and painting tips

Gloss red is a different discipline from a tank. On a fire truck nothing can be hidden under mud and pigments - the gloss shows every flaw in the surface: every piece of flash left unsanded, every visible parting line, every smear of glue. So: sand the parting lines down carefully, fill the transitions, spray the whole part with primer and sand that smooth (fine wet sanding paper). Only then spray the paint in thin coats, ideally with an airbrush, and finish with a gloss clear coat. That will also protect the decals. Paint the chassis, the engine and the cab interior before you close the body up. Given the number of parts and the size, the kit is time-consuming - it calls for calm and a system.

Who the model is for

  • Advanced modelers - 476 parts, difficulty level 5.
  • Fans of firefighting and rescue equipment and of airport operations.
  • Collectors of the large 1:24 scale who have somewhere to put the model.
  • Modelers who want to try a quality gloss finish.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Grossflugfeldloeschfahrzeug - a large fire truck for the airport apron. It is not military equipment: the truck's job is to reach a burning aircraft as fast as possible and to bring a large amount of extinguishing agent.

The real vehicle is about twelve meters long, so in 1:24 scale the model comes out around half a meter long and correspondingly wide. It pays to check where you will put it before buying.

The key is the preparation of the surface. The gloss shows every parting line left unsanded and every smear of glue. Sand the transitions down, spray with primer and sand that wet, then spray the paint in thin coats and finish with a gloss clear coat. Weathering will not hide mistakes here.

Rather not. Revell puts it at difficulty level 5 and it has 476 parts - plus the gloss finish, which forgives little. It is a build for a modeler who already has something behind him.
