A set of injection-molded plastic figures from the Ukrainian brand ICM in 1:35 scale. The figures represent the crew of an American fire truck of the 1910s, that is from the time when horse teams were only just being replaced by motor machines. It is not a kit of a vehicle — it is an accessory intended for a model of period equipment or for a scene of its own. The parts are on sprues and the figures are glued and painted by the usual methods.
Injection-molded figures are cut off the sprue with nippers, and the remainder of the gate is cleaned up with a scalpel and fine abrasive paper. The parting seams call for the most attention — on figures they run across the arms, the legs and the hem of the clothing, where they show clearly once painted. Work patiently, so as not to lose the engraving of the folds. The model is glued with a thin cement for plastic applied with a brush into the joints; fill and sand any small gaps in the shoulder joints. Before painting it pays to fix the figures on a temporary holder, so that they can be turned without touching them with your fingers.
Before you start painting, set the figures out dry where they are to go and think their relationships through — who is looking where, who is holding what. The poses are set by the casting; what you mainly influence is the rotation and the spacing between them. They are painted over a primer: first the skin, then the clothing and the gear, and finally small details such as buckles, buttons and helmets. Faces in this scale stand out when you shade the base tone with a darker shade into the eye sockets and under the cheekbones and lighten the highest points slightly. A fine wash brings out the folds of the cloth, and a dry brush emphasizes the metal parts. A final matte varnish evens the surface out and ties the figures visually into the rest of the scene.
The set of figures is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the model of the vehicle are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
