About product

BM-13-16 on a W.O.T. 8 chassis in 1:35 scale (ICM)

A plastic kit of a rocket launcher vehicle in 1:35 scale from the Ukrainian brand ICM. It combines the BM-13-16 launcher with the British W.O.T. 8 truck chassis, that is with a vehicle supplied under wartime material aid. It is precisely this combination that is interesting for a modeler — most kits cover the rocket launcher on the more common home-built chassis, whereas here we have a rarer variant with a different cab and different axles. The model is supplied unassembled, as injection-molded sprues; the number of parts, the contents of the package and the number of marking options are given in the instructions in the box.

The real subject

The BM-13 was a salvo rocket launcher used during the Second World War, mounted on truck chassis. The designation 13-16 refers to the version with sixteen rail guides from which 132 mm unguided rockets were fired. The assembly consisted of a launching rack with an adjustable elevation, outriggers for stabilization and a folding cab shield protecting the crew during firing. The W.O.T. 8 was a British truck with all-wheel drive that reached Soviet service through deliveries from abroad.

Building and painting tips

Work in subassemblies: the frame with the axles, the cab, the engine and only at the very end the launcher. The rails of the rack are long and thin, so glue them on a flat surface to keep them from twisting. Paint the cab and the interior before closing it. Painting: spray a primer, apply the base shade with an airbrush in two tones to break up the uniform surface, then a wash in the recesses and pick out the edges with a dry brush. On a vehicle of this type the chassis and the fenders are naturally the dirtiest parts — apply pigments and mud from the bottom upwards and let them fade out. The particular shade codes can be found in the instructions in the box.

Who the model is for

  • modelers interested in military equipment of the Second World War
  • builders of trucks and of less usual chassis
  • those who want to set the model into a diorama with an artillery theme

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
