The Ukrainian manufacturer ICM offers a standalone injection-molded plastic set of the Soviet DShKM heavy machine gun of 12.7 mm caliber in 1:35 scale. The set allows the weapon to be built in two mounting options — on the infantry mount and on a pedestal (pintle) mount. It is not a vehicle model: it is an accessory with which you arm the beds of trucks, off-road vehicles, pickups or armored vehicles, add a firing position to figures or bring a diorama scene to life. The parts are injection-molded polystyrene, so they are worked with the usual modeling methods.
The DShK (Degtyarev-Shpagin, large caliber) is a Soviet heavy machine gun for the 12.7x108 mm cartridge, taken into service in the second half of the 1930s. After the war the modernized DShKM version appeared and became one of the most widespread weapons of its class in the world. It served as an infantry support weapon on a wheeled mount, as an anti-aircraft machine gun on the turrets of tanks and armored vehicles, and as a pintle-mounted weapon on countless vehicles. Thanks to mass export to the countries of the Warsaw Pact, Asia, Africa and the Middle East it appears in conflicts from the 1950s practically to the present day — which makes it a rewarding accessory for an enormous range of vehicle and figure subjects.
The weapon has small, fine parts (sights, grips, belt feed, the cooling fins of the barrel) — use a thin modeling cement for plastic and apply it with a fine brush after dry-fitting the parts. Before painting, spray the assembly with a base primer; it will reveal flaws and improve adhesion. The metal of the weapon looks best as a dark steel (gunmetal) or black base coat with dry-brushing or a graphite sheen added on the edges. Bring the assembly to life with a dark wash into the recesses and a fine dust pigment around the mount. If you are placing the machine gun on a vehicle, dry-fit the mounting of the cradle too — it will save you extra work later.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
