The Ardennes are wooded uplands on the borders of Belgium, Luxembourg and France with scattered villages of thick stone and brick masonry. The houses there have plain rectangular openings, deep reveals and steep roofs. As soon as such a house becomes a ruin, a typical trio of surfaces is left behind: exposed masonry, torn-away render and rubble at the foot of the wall. It is exactly that contrast that makes a ruin a rewarding subject, because on a small area it offers a great many different surfaces.
A ruin of a house in 1:35 scale is usually set in a diorama as a rear or a side wall. It closes the scene off, gives it height and serves as a scale comparison for figures and equipment that would otherwise stand in empty space. The openings left by windows and doors also offer views through, so the scene has something to show from the other side as well.
Free the surface of dust before painting. Apply the paint in thin coats, otherwise the texture of the masonry is lost; a darker base, a dark glaze drawn into the joints and only then brightening of the edges with a dry brush work well. Keep the pigments mainly at the foot of the wall, where dust and grit really do fall. Set the ruin into the ground rather than merely standing it on a base: the gap between the wall and the base gives the whole illusion away.
