A replacement barrel for the main weapon of the German Nashorn tank destroyer in 1:35 scale. It is not a vehicle kit but an accessory in its own right which replaces the barrel from the box. According to the name there is one piece in the package. On the Nashorn the barrel dominates the whole silhouette, because the long gun projects markedly beyond the front of the vehicle.
The Nashorn, earlier designated the Hornisse, was an improvised but exceptionally effective tank destroyer. On a chassis derived from the German medium tanks it seated a tall open superstructure and in it an 88 mm PaK 43/1 anti-tank gun with an L/71 barrel. The combination came out oddly: the vehicle was tall, only lightly armored and the crew was unprotected from above, yet the weapon could destroy targets at ranges most contemporary tanks could not even reach. The Nashorn was therefore used as an ambush weapon firing from a distance and from cover, not as a vehicle for a direct clash.
Fit the long barrel only at the very end of the build, otherwise you will catch it while handling the model. Look at the muzzle against the light and carefully remove any excess with a drill turned in the fingers. It works well to paint it away from the model so that the barrel can be held at both ends. Along its length, fine shading and emphasis of the edges come out, and the muzzle and the muzzle brake then take smoky tones. Finally, check that the barrel sits on the center line of the vehicle, because on a part this long even a slight deviation shows at once.
