An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet KV-1 heavy tank in the model 1942 version with the simplified welded turret, in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. It is the angular turret welded up from flat armor plates that sets this version apart from the variants with a cast turret. The model carries the 76.2mm gun and the characteristic ribbed steel road wheels; according to the manufacturer the box also offers parts for the flamethrower version. The exact numbers of parts and of marking options differ between individual releases.
The KV-1 was a Soviet heavy tank of the early Second World War, named after Kliment Voroshilov. Its thick armor was at first hard for German tanks and anti-tank guns to penetrate. The model 1942 version was built at a time when the design was being simplified under the pressure of wartime production. The simplified turret was welded up from flat armor plates, which speeded production up. The tank was armed with a 76.2mm gun and in later versions received a heavier cast turret.
Assemble the running gear, the ribbed steel wheels and the tracks first — on this kit the tracks tend to be link-by-link and cleaning them up takes longer, so allow for the time. Apply a primer and then the base color; Soviet vehicles typically wear a uniform dark green. The welded turret rewards bringing out the welds and edges with dry-brushing. Underline the panel lines and hatches with a wash, and add mud and dust pigments to the lower areas and the running gear for realistic weathering.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
