The collapsed part of a sanctuary with a statue of the Buddha belongs among the diorama accessories of the Italian brand Royal Model. It is not a model of a vehicle or a figure but a piece of the setting: a centerpiece around which a whole scene can be built. Broken masonry and a damaged statue give a tableau an immediately legible story and at the same time serve as a natural screen that sets a clear boundary to the view into depth.
Buddhist sanctuaries stood along the roads of all Southeast Asia, and during the fighting in Indochina and in Vietnam they often became strongpoints or merely incidental victims of firefights. It is precisely for that reason that temple ruins are a popular background for American and French tableaux from this area, as well as for the Burmese battlefields of the Second World War. The contrast of a calm statue and military equipment is one of the strongest motifs that diorama work offers.
Stone surfaces stand out when several thin glazing layers are laid over the base shade and a dark wash is let run into the joints. A tropical climate is suggested by a green film at the foot of the masonry, lighter dust on the horizontal surfaces and traces of rain running down the verticals. It pays to set the statue apart with a warmer tone than the surrounding wall, so that it remains the center of attention.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
