About product

Admiral Graf Spee: a plastic kit of a pocket battleship, 1:350 scale, Trumpeter

Injection-molded plastic kit of the German ship Admiral Graf Spee in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. It was a so-called pocket battleship (in German Panzerschiff, armored ship), a heavily armed but physically smaller cruiser. The model is therefore somewhat smaller than the classic battleships in the same scale, yet it offers a great deal of detail: photo-etched masts and railings, decals, a lower waterline plate, one shipboard floatplane and a stand with a nameplate. The superstructure, the main armament turrets and the smaller weapons are all finely rendered.

The real subject

The Admiral Graf Spee was a pocket battleship of the Deutschland class, commissioned in 1936. The concept arose as an answer to the limits placed on the Kriegsmarine: the ship fitted within a relatively low tonnage limit but carried unusually heavy armament, six 28 cm guns in two triple turrets. She was therefore more powerful than an ordinary cruiser, and thanks to her diesel propulsion she had great range. In December 1939 she fought a battle with British cruisers at the mouth of the River Plate; damaged, she anchored at Montevideo in Uruguay and on 17 December 1939 her own crew scuttled her so that she would not fall into enemy hands. She is often named as the first German warship fitted with a search radar.

Building and painting tips

The model is built with the lower waterline plate; glue the plastic parts with thin cement for plastic and the photo-etched masts and railings with cyanoacrylate glue, as these are fine parts that need a steady hand. Lay down a primer before painting; the hull is painted along the waterline and the real ship wore the typical German naval shades of gray, in some cases with a camouflage pattern. A dark wash and light weathering will bring the deck and the engraved texture to life, and paint the small floatplane and its propeller separately. Fill around the fine superstructure and the rangefinders carefully; a complete set of photo-etched railings and ladders can be added from separate sets.

Who the model is for

  • For anyone interested in the Kriegsmarine and in less common ship types of the Second World War.
  • For modelers drawn to the pocket battleship concept and to working with photo-etched parts.
  • For builders of 1:350 ship models who will appreciate the wealth of detail and the shipboard floatplane.
  • For collectors looking for a handsome model with a stand and a nameplate.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a nickname for the German ships of the Deutschland class (officially Panzerschiff). They fitted within a low tonnage limit but carried unusually heavy armament, which made them more powerful than an ordinary cruiser yet smaller than a real battleship.

Yes. The real ship was physically smaller than the classic battleships, so the model is shorter in the same 1:350 scale. It has plenty of detail, though, including photo-etched parts and a shipboard floatplane.

The box contains the lower waterline plate, so the model is built as a waterline version, the ship at sea. It can be set on the enclosed stand with its nameplate.
