The Japanese submarine I-400 in 1:350 scale from Tamiya. A plastic kit of the largest submarine of the Second World War, which carried aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
A kit of a submarine that was an outright exception in her day. The I-400 was not built to attack merchant ships but as an aircraft carrier: amidships she had a watertight hangar and on deck a catapult from which floatplanes were launched. In 1:350 scale the finished model comes out roughly thirty centimeters long, so it stands out on a shelf even beside models of surface ships. The maker is the Japanese firm Tamiya.
The I-400 class submarines were the largest submarines of the Second World War and kept that distinction until nuclear-powered submarines appeared. They carried three single-engine floatplanes folded so that they fitted into the tubular hangar on deck. The intention was to reach a remote target unnoticed and to attack it from the air, from a direction nobody expected. They were completed only at the very end of the war and the planned operation never took place.
The hull of a submarine is a large smooth surface on which every unevenness shows, so fill and sand the seams carefully. Lay the dividing line between the lower and upper colors with masking tape and make sure it is at the same height on both sides. Finish the deck, the hangar and the catapult before you fit the small equipment. Keep the patina restrained: a submarine was not a dusty machine but a surface with worn paint and water marks.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
