This kit from the French brand Heller brings the E 50 fast escort ships to the popular ship scale of 1:400. It comes from Heller's traditional naval line, which has long concentrated on vessels of the French Navy. Once assembled and painted, you get the slim, elegant silhouette of a postwar escort, a subject that turns up only rarely among ship kits.
The E 50 escorteurs rapides, known after the lead ship as the Le Corse class, were built in the 1950s for the French Navy. They were fast anti-submarine escorts of the Cold War era, drawing on the experience of the Battle of the Atlantic: their job was escorting convoys and patrolling coastal waters, which their rich anti-submarine armament reflects.
At 1:400 it is the cleanliness of the work that counts. Paint the small sub-assemblies while they are still on the sprue, and leave the masts and aerial rigging until the very end. The hull suits finely shaded tones of gray, the deck a light wash to bring out its detail. Dry-fit the superstructures beforehand so that you can check how they sit without any trace of glue.
