An injection-molded plastic kit of the American experimental turboprop aircraft Douglas A2D-1 Skyshark in 1:48 scale from Clear Prop Models in the Advanced release. It is a richly equipped short-run kit from a smaller specialized brand: besides finely engraved plastic it also contains a set of photo-etched parts and decals for several color schemes. The scope and the detail match a more demanding project — the kit is intended for more experienced builders who will appreciate a high level of detail.
The A2D Skyshark was an attempt by the US Navy to replace a piston-engined attack aircraft with turboprop power. A pair of turbines drove contra-rotating propellers through a common gearbox, which promised more power. The program was dogged by trouble with the power system, however, and with the arrival of jet aircraft it lost its point — so the Skyshark remained an experimental chapter and never reached series service. It is precisely the rarity of the real subject that makes the model an interesting piece for a collection.
With a short-run kit, dry-fit the parts and gently sand the joints if needed. Glue the photo-etched parts with super glue only after the surrounding area has been varnished. Use liquid cement for plastic and lay down a primer before painting, which will reveal any flaws. Put a gloss coat under the decals and unify the whole with a matte one.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
