Responsibility details are not available.
A kit in injection-molded plastic in the popular aircraft scale of 1:48. The British name Tomahawk Mk.II corresponds to the American machines of the P-40B and P-40C series, which were delivered to the Commonwealth. Airfix is a British brand, and its newer molds in this scale bank on engraved panel lines and on a breakdown that allows selected parts of the airframe to be opened up.
The Curtiss P-40 came about from the early P-36 version by replacing the radial engine with the V12 Allison V-1710 with a radiator under the nose. It was that long bath under the engine that gave the aircraft its recognizable silhouette. The machines designated Tomahawk served mainly in North Africa and in the Middle East, where they proved themselves over the desert and in supporting ground forces. In combat at altitude they were held back by an engine without a second supercharger stage, but down low it was a tough and well-handling aircraft.
Desert schemes call for careful grading of the shades, because the sun bleached the colors strongly. It pays to lay down a base tone and to lighten the areas inside the panels with a faint breath of a lighter color. The cooling bath under the nose is on show, so it is worth checking its shape before the fuselage is glued together. Dust on the lower surfaces comes from pigment applied with a dry brush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
