About product

Dornier Do 217 M-1 in 1:48 scale — an ICM kit

The Do 217 M-1 is an injection-molded plastic kit of the German twin-engine heavy bomber from ICM in 1:48 scale. The model has a well-worked bomb bay including the bomb load and separate doors, and both engine nacelles contain complete engines, so with a small modification they can be displayed with the cowlings open. Clear parts, masks for the glazing and decals for Luftwaffe machines are included. It is an extensive kit with many small parts — rather for modelers who already have a build or two behind them.

The real subject

The Dornier Do 217 was a much larger and more powerful development of the well-known Do 17 — a full-fledged heavy bomber with a considerably greater bomb load and a longer range. The key recognition feature of the M-1 version is its liquid-cooled inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines, whereas the related K-1 version carried radial engines. The difference is visible at first glance in the shape of the engine nacelles: the more angular, slender nacelles of the inverted V12s against the cylindrical cowlings of the radials. The Luftwaffe used the Do 217 M mainly over the British Isles and the Mediterranean in 1943–1944, among other things on night raids.

Building and painting tips

Use liquid cement for plastic, which wicks into the seam — on the large fuselage and wing parts it holds the joints better than a thick glue. Paint and highlight the cockpit, the bomb bay and the engines before you close the fuselage. Apply a primer before painting, then spray with an airbrush: the typical German bomber schemes are built on gray-green upper surfaces and a light underside, and on a dark oversprayed finish on night machines. Prepare a gloss surface for the decals and matte the model down once they are dry. The engraved panel lines benefit from a fine panel wash.

Who the model is for

  • For experienced modelers — a large kit with a great many small parts
  • For collectors of Luftwaffe aircraft and twin-engine bombers in 1:48
  • For those who want to display open engines and an open bomb bay
  • For fans of ICM and their line of Dorniers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The M-1 version had liquid-cooled inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines, while the K-1 version, for example, carried radial engines. The difference shows in the shape and cross-section of the engine nacelles.

Rather not. It is a large twin-engine bomber with a great many small parts, a detailed bomb bay and complete engines. We recommend it to modelers who have already built several simpler kits.

Yes. The bomb bay has separate doors and a bomb load, and the engines in the nacelles are modeled in full. To display the engines uncovered, though, the cowlings need a small modification.

No. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, paints and glue are not included in the package.
