This injection-molded plastic kit from the Italian maker Italeri captures the two-seat F/A-18F version of the carrier-borne Super Hornet multirole aircraft in 1:48 scale. The boxing subtitled Special Colors concentrates on the striking finishes worn by command aircraft and by specially marked machines of the US Navy. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Super Hornet grew out of the concept of the earlier F/A-18 Hornet, but it is a considerably larger and structurally separate aircraft: it has an enlarged airframe, a reworked forward fuselage, angular air intakes and more powerful engines. The F version is a two-seater with the seats in tandem; the rear position is for the second crew member. The aircraft is built for carrier operations, which means a stronger landing gear, an arrestor hook and folding wingtips. A wide range of stores makes it the typical multirole machine of naval aviation.
Finish and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. Use a thin liquid cement applied by capillary action on the joints, fill only where you must, and rescribe panel lines that sanding has taken away. Spray a gloss coat before the decals — with colorful schemes this is essential, because large decals silver on a matte surface. Leave the folding wingtips and the stores until the end so that the model is easy to hold. Carrier aircraft are usually worn and stained by exhaust gases, but with a special scheme it pays to keep the weathering restrained so that the artwork is not lost.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
