About product

Kamov Ka-27 Helix (1:48, Hobby Boss)

Large injection-molded plastic kit of the Russian Kamov Ka-27 naval helicopter, NATO reporting name Helix, in the large 1:48 scale from Hobby Boss. The kit is richly broken down: molded in gray plastic on a number of sprues, with clear parts for the cabin glazing, a small photo-etched part and a metal rotor shaft. Its characteristic feature is the pair of coaxial contra-rotating rotors, thanks to which the machine needs no tail rotor. The model therefore offers a lot of detail, including the cabin.

The real subject

The Kamov Ka-27 is a Russian shipborne helicopter intended mainly for anti-submarine work and for rescue and liaison duties from the decks of warships. It follows on from the older Ka-25 and carries the typical signature of the Kamov design bureau: two coaxial main rotors turning against each other, which cancel out the torque reaction and make a tail rotor unnecessary. The layout shortens the machine and suits cramped ship decks.

Building and painting tips

The large scale rewards finishing and painting the cabin before the fuselage is closed. Use a thin cement on the plastic and seat the metal rotor shaft firmly so that the coaxial heads stay aligned. Take your time over the assembly of the two contra-rotating rotors, because that is the visual essence of the machine. Apply a primer before painting; naval gray schemes suit an airbrush, and the panel lines can be accentuated with a wash and light drybrushing on the edges.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of naval helicopters in the large 1:48 scale
  • For modelers interested in Kamov design and coaxial rotors
  • For more advanced builders who will appreciate the rich detail
  • For lovers of Russian and Soviet hardware

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It uses two coaxial main rotors turning against each other. They cancel out each other's torque reaction, so no balancing tail rotor is needed. It is the typical signature of Kamov design.

It is a shipborne naval helicopter intended mainly for anti-submarine work and for rescue and liaison duties from the decks of warships.

Rather not. It is a richly broken down kit with a large number of parts and a demanding assembly of the coaxial rotors, so it is better suited to more experienced modelers.
