About product

Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave in 1:72 Scale from Special Hobby

A kit of the heavy transport helicopter in 1:72 scale. Special Hobby is a Czech maker that has long specialized in short-run models of less common types that the big brands do not offer. Building such a kit tends to be a little more demanding than a mass-produced one and rewards the modeler who already has some experience.

The real subject

The Sikorsky H-37 Mojave, known to its maker as the S-56, was among the largest American-built helicopters of the second half of the 1950s. It differed from the usual machines of its day in having two piston radial engines in nacelles on the sides of the fuselage, into which the main landing gear retracted — leaving the fuselage clear for a large cargo hold. The nose opened sideways like a clamshell, so a light vehicle could be driven inside or a gun loaded. The machine served with the Marine Corps and with the Army, where after 1962 it was designated CH-37, and it became known among other things for recovering damaged aircraft and helicopters from inaccessible terrain. Its piston layout also places it at the very end of a line of development that turbine types soon replaced.

Building and painting tips

With short-run moldings expect heavier sprue gates and a looser fit. It pays to dry-fit the fuselage first, even the mating surfaces by sanding and only then glue. Fill the gaps, sand them back and spray a filler primer, which reliably shows up any flaws. Mask the extensive cockpit glazing and fit it as late as you can. The finish of helicopters of this type tends to be uniform and matte, so the result comes alive rather through light panel line highlighting, dust on the landing gear and marks of use around the cargo door and the exhausts.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American helicopters of the 1950s and 1960s
  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Anyone interested in unusual machines with piston engines
  • Builders of display cases in a single 1:72 scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The molds are made in smaller runs and with simpler tooling. The parts tend to be heavier, the fit looser, and the build calls for sanding and filling. The reward is a model of a type that is otherwise not on the market.

We recommend it rather to modelers who have already built several plastic kits. Without experience of fitting parts the build can be frustrating.

It was one of the largest American helicopters of its time. Its engines were in side nacelles, which left the fuselage clear for cargo, and the nose opened for loading.
