A starter package with a kit of the German Molch type midget submarine in 1:72 scale, completed with basic paints, a brush and glue.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Molch, meaning newt, was the simplest of the German small battle craft. A hull about eleven meters long held a large battery, a single crewman and two torpedoes slung on the sides. Electric propulsion gave it a submerged speed of barely five knots and a range limited by the capacity of the cells; the craft could neither run on diesel power nor move quickly to another theater.
Several hundred were built, and their use off the Italian coast and in the mouths of the Dutch rivers brought far more losses of their own than targets sunk. The crewman had only a minimum of instruments, breathed air from a limited supply and found his way by compass and watch. It is exactly this combination of courage and hopelessness that makes the small craft a powerful subject.
The package with equipment for a start is prepared so that building can begin as soon as it is opened. Besides the injection-molded parts it contains a set of acrylic paints, a brush and glue, so nothing else has to be bought. The small extent of the build makes it a suitable entry into the submarine theme without a commitment of several months.
The surface is brought to life well with a wash into the welds and a hint of algae on the lower part of the hull. The stand holds the craft in a display attitude, but it also looks good laid on a water surface of shaped clear material, where it finally becomes clear how small a part of the machine stood above the water and how easily it could escape notice.
Small craft of this kind also suit comparison: stood beside a classic ocean-going submarine, they show the difference in what counts as a warship.
