This item is not a model or a kit: it is a vacuum-formed clear cockpit canopy with which a modeler replaces the glazing supplied in the base kit of the Gloster E28/39 aircraft in 1:72 scale. Vacuum-formed film is considerably thinner than an injection-molded clear part and has no parting seam, so the glazing reads more faithfully and you can see into the cockpit through it better. That is exactly why a part of this kind is bought: in small scales the thickness of a plastic canopy is the most conspicuous shortcoming. Clear Prop Models is a Ukrainian manufacturer which, alongside kits, also runs a range of accessories of its own.
The Gloster E28/39, also known as the Pioneer, was the first British aircraft with jet propulsion. It flew in 1941 and served as a flying test bed for the turbine engine designed by Frank Whittle. It was a small single-seat machine with nose gear, all-metal construction and the air intakes in the nose. It did not go into series production, and its significance lies in development: it proved the usability of jet propulsion and prepared the way for the later British combat aircraft.
A vacuum-formed part is cut out of the film, not cut off a sprue. First mark the outline with a marker, then trim the film roughly with scissors and sand down to the final edge with fine paper on a glass plate, so that the edge sits exactly. You will make the work easier if you first fill the area around the part with a compound that stiffens the canopy. Before gluing, the part can be dipped in clear gloss varnish, which unifies the surface and increases its clarity. It is glued exclusively with a cement for glazing or with white PVA glue, as cyanoacrylate and classic cement for plastic will fog the film. Mask the frames with thin tape cut into strips.
This is an accessory for modelers, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
