About product

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I in 1:72 Scale from Airfix

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British fighter Hawker Hurricane in the Mk.I version, in 1:72 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; it is built from plastic parts on sprues and comes with a decal sheet. The exact package contents, part count, and the range of markings cannot be determined from the name — they depend on the specific edition stated by the manufacturer on the box.

The real subject

The Hurricane was the first British single-wing fighter with retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit to enter regular service. The fuselage had a welded tubular frame covered with a combination of fabric and metal panels, which made it easier to repair damaged aircraft in the field. The powerplant was the liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin V12, and the armament consisted of eight 7.7 mm machine guns mounted in the wing. The Mk.I version changed during production: the earliest aircraft flew with a wooden two-blade propeller, while later ones received a metal variable-pitch propeller and armor behind the pilot's seat. In this form, the Hurricane made up the numerically strongest part of British fighter aviation in 1940.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale, it pays to start with the cockpit, since access becomes limited once the fuselage is glued together. Cut the parts from the sprues with clippers and sand away any remaining gate marks so the fuselage halves and wing fit together without stress. Glue with thin liquid cement for polystyrene, applied by capillary action into the seams. Before painting, apply a thin coat of primer that evens out the surface and reveals any scratches left from sanding. Early-war British schemes rely on a sharp division between the upper camouflage shades and the light underside, so an airbrush and soft masking with putty rope or liquid mask work well. Apply the decals over a gloss coat and settle them with a decal softener so they follow the engraved detail.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in British aviation of the Second World War.
  • Builders in 1:72 scale who collect Battle of Britain fighters.
  • Less experienced modelers looking for a manageable build of a classic aircraft.
  • Those interested in comparing the Hurricane with a contemporary Spitfire in the same display case.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a classic injection-molded kit, supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints need to be purchased separately.

Yes. An aircraft kit in 1:72 scale is a manageable project — all it takes is clippers, a file, thin liquid cement for plastic, and patience when fitting the parts.

The exact number of parts and the range of markings cannot be determined from the name — the manufacturer states them on the box of the given edition. We therefore do not state them ourselves.

A thin coat of primer and an airbrush work well; for early-war British schemes, soft masking of the transition between the upper shades also helps.
