About product

The German BMW R75 with a sidecar — a 1:9 kit, Italeri

A plastic kit of the German military motorcycle BMW R75 with a sidecar in 1:9 scale from Italeri. For a motorcycle, 1:9 is enormous: according to the manufacturer the assembled model measures 26.7 cm long, so it is an exceptionally large and detailed piece that will not get lost on a shelf. The box holds parts in gray and clear plastic, rubber tires and decals for four marking options. The manufacturer rates the kit at its highest level of difficulty.

The real subject

The BMW R75 was created to a direct order from the German army and went into production during the war. It was powered by an air-cooled 750 cc twin. Its essential technical peculiarity was drive to the sidecar wheel as well: the torque reached the third wheel by a shaft from the rear wheel through a locking differential, and the machine also had a reduction gearbox with road and off-road ratios. It was therefore not an ordinary motorcycle with a chair but a full off-road machine that could handle mud, sand and broken ground, which was by no means usual for sidecar outfits. The sidecar was commonly fitted with a machine gun and the machine served from North Africa to the Eastern Front. That makes the model an excellent basis for a diorama: a field track, mud and a crew.

Building and painting tips

Given the size of the scale, it pays to proceed as with military vehicles: finish the engine, the drive train and the frame first, and only then close up the assemblies. Use liquid cement for plastic, and cyanoacrylate glue on the rubber tires. A primer is a must on a surface this large. Apply the colors with an airbrush; in 1:9 both shade modulation and a dry brush drawn across the edges come out well. Build the patina step by step: a dark wash in the recesses of the frame and the engine, and pigments for mud and dust effects on the wheels, the fenders and the underside of the sidecar.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of German hardware of the Second World War
  • Diorama builders, as the large scale carries a detailed scene
  • Modelers who want a large, display piece and are not afraid of weathering
  • Anyone interested in technical curiosities such as a driven sidecar wheel and a locking differential

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The sidecar wheel was driven by a shaft from the rear wheel through a locking differential, and the motorcycle also had a reduction gearbox with road and off-road ratios. That is exactly why it handled terrain that ordinary sidecar outfits could not.

According to the manufacturer the assembled model measures 26.7 cm. For a motorcycle, 1:9 is an exceptionally large scale, so count on a bulky display piece with a matching amount of detail.

The decals cover four options. The particular units and theaters are given in the instructions included in the box.

Very much so. A motorcycle with a sidecar in 1:9 makes a natural center for a scene: a field track, mud and a crew. Figures and scenic accessories are obtained separately, unless stated otherwise.
