Fourteen horsemen, bases for the unit and an extensive color painting guide make up the contents of this box from Perry Miniatures. The span of years given in the name is no accident: the parts cover both the hussars of the Revolutionary Wars and the horsemen of the last imperial campaigns, so collections from two rather different periods can be added to from a single set.
Hussar regiments arose as light cavalry of Hungarian origin, and their task was not the frontal charge but reconnaissance, raids on supply columns, the pursuit of a retreating enemy and a screen ahead of their own army. Over the years the French army raised several dozen of them, and every regiment took pride in its own color combination of dolman, pelisse and cap. It is exactly that variety that makes hussars a favorite subject for figure painters, because two units side by side look utterly different.
Paint the lace on the chest with a fine brush only after the base color of the dolman is finished; it helps to straighten the point of the brush after every stroke. The pelisse slung over the shoulder is a separate part, so it can be painted apart and fitted at the very end. Look the color scheme of the regiment up in advance; with hussars even the pattern on the shabraque differs.
The horsemen come in raw plastic; to finish them you need glue and paints.
