About product

Revell 99 Aluminium, a metallic enamel paint (14 ml)

Revell 99 Aluminium is a modeling paint, not a kit. It comes from the Revell Email Color range and is a synthetic enamel paint on a solvent base, not an acrylic; it is thinned with Revell Color Mix or mineral spirits and takes brush as well as airbrush. The shade is a cool, light grayish aluminum with a metallic sparkle. Of all the metallics, aluminum is by far the one a modeler reaches for most often, as practically no aircraft model can do without it.

Use

  • Bare metal surfaces of aircraft (natural metal): the polished duralumin skins of fighters and bombers.
  • Exhaust pipes, nozzle outlets and heat-stressed places (a good base under dark washes).
  • Wheel rims, hubs, running gear and the metal parts of landing gear.
  • Rubbed places and paint scuffs: stippling with a sponge or a dry brush on panel edges.
  • Small metal details: knives, propeller blades, tanks, factory engine covers.

How to work with metallic paint

The aluminum flakes are only temporarily dispersed in the paint: they settle at the bottom, and as soon as you stir the bottle only from the top you will draw out mostly binder and the shade will come out pale and without shine. Stir persistently, therefore, and right down to the bottom. Aluminum is moreover the metallic most sensitive to the quality of the base: the metal flakes settle into every scratch and imperfection and literally pull them out onto the surface, so sand the surface before spraying and lay a smooth, gloss base under it, as only on that will aluminum shine. And because a metallic is hard to overspray and takes masking tape badly, plan it as the last color layer; if you do have to mask, use a low-tack tape and peel it off slowly at a sharp angle.

Who it is for

For aircraft modelers above all, as schemes with bare metal cannot be built without aluminum. It also comes into play on cars, motorcycles, vehicles and everywhere that bare, unpainted metal is wanted. Compared with acrylic, an enamel paint has the advantage of staying wet longer and flowing out into a smooth surface better.

A flammable liquid. The vapors irritate the airways, so ensure good ventilation and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

Many machines flew with an unpainted, polished duralumin skin, the so-called natural metal scheme. They cannot be painted convincingly without an aluminum metallic, which is why it is among the most frequently restocked shades.

We recommend it. The metal flakes settle into every unevenness and emphasize it more than a covering paint does. On a smooth, gloss base aluminum looks considerably better and more even.

Only with care. Metallics are harder to overspray and tape may damage the layer. Apply aluminum as the final color, or use a low-tack tape and peel it off slowly.

It is not an acrylic, so water does not work. Use Revell Color Mix thinner, or mineral spirits.
