An electric reciprocating sander for modelers

A reciprocating sander does not work by rotating, but by moving the head quickly back and forth over a very short stroke. The difference from a rotary sander is fundamental: the tool does not wander sideways, does not leave a circular mark and does not dig into soft plastic, so it can be used safely on a flat surface and right up against an edge. According to the manufacturer the tool has three speed settings, namely 2800, 3100 and 3600 strokes per minute, a 2.5 millimeter stroke and eight interchangeable sanding heads of various shapes with a quick-change system. It is battery powered with charging over a USB interface, and according to the manufacturer the tool runs for about a hundred minutes and charges in roughly twenty. A charge indicator is included as well, and an overload protection that switches the tool off by itself if the head is pressed hard.

Use

• Do not press; the tool works by its stroke, not by force. Heavy pressure only trips the overload protection.
• Choose the shape of the head to suit the place: a flat one for flat surfaces, a square or triangular one for corners.
• Start at the lowest setting and speed up only when it is clear how the material reacts.
• Clean the heads after work; a clogged head stops sanding and starts polishing.
• When sanding resin, work in a ventilated room and protect your airways.

Who it is for

The tool suits modelers who clean up a large number of parts or who work with resin and printed parts, where removing material is a regular part of the job. It will not replace hand sanding completely, but it markedly shortens the part of it that is merely laborious.
