COYOTE BROWN belongs among the tones that have moved from army depots straight into modeling bottles. It is a lighter brown turned toward yellow, which plate carriers, backpacks, boots, holsters and the rope parts of equipment have carried since the start of the century. Anyone building a figure of a present-day soldier or of modern special forces reaches for it more often than for any green.
The shade is of the kind that looks flat on its own. It benefits greatly from being divided into three steps: a darker brown glaze into the seams and gaps, the base tone on the areas and a light brightening on the edges of the straps and the buckles. Only that gives textile gear readability on a small figure.
In mixing it is rewarding. With a small proportion of gray it gives the shade of worn fabric, with a drop of ocher it shifts toward the sandy position of desert units. That is exactly why it pays to mix on the palette in drops and to note the ratio down, so that it can be made up again when it runs out during a build.
On printed parts with visible layers it is good to count on a lighter brown accentuating the grooves more than dark tones do. Either the surface is sanded down and sprayed over with a filler primer beforehand, or the grooves are used as the texture of fabric and a glaze is sunk into them.
