Hunter Green is among the darkest green tones of the whole Maxx Formula range. The name is aimed at the color of hunting cloth, that is at a cold, heavily muted green of the kind worn by hunting equipment of the nineteenth century. On a figure it therefore finds use everywhere cloth is to look practical and unobtrusive: the cloaks of rangers, the coats of forest scouts, the tarpaulins of wagons or the green parts of field uniforms.
The density of pigment is high, so the tone covers even over a dark base and once dry it stays evenly matte. Thanks to that, layers are built well with it: the first coat lays the overall tone, further thinned passes deepen the folds and brightening arises from mixing in a lighter green or a bone shade. A dry brush draws out the edges of the fabric without any unwanted gloss appearing.
Dark greens tend to be in short supply in a palette, because they mix badly from brighter tones without losing their cleanness. This shade fills that role by itself and serves at the same time as a shadow base under the fresh greens of a landscape.
Before applying it, it pays to wash the part in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let it dry freely. On smooth resin and on metal an acrylic layer holds substantially better when a thin primer sprayed from a can lies beneath it.
